Cold Chain Shipping Solution: The BioShell® Insulated Shipper

A critical step in the cold chain distribution process for the biopharmaceutical industry is ensuring that bulk drug shipments remain undamaged and within a specific temperature range during transportation. An increase in temperature throughout this transportation process could compromise the integrity of these temperature sensitive products, resulting in large potential loses for pharmaceutical companies. To mitigate these risks companies are relying on cold chain solutions that can provide impact protection and maintain low temperatures throughout the supply chain.

At UFP Technologies we have developed a universal storage container, the BioShell® Suspension Pack, which protects single use bags during storage, handling and shipping. The BioShell is designed to hold a variety of bags from all manufacturers. BioShell’s unique film molds tightly to biopharmaceutical bags and suspends them within a rigid polycarbonate UV protective shell.  The suspension film absorbs shocks during impact, allowing bags to move within a cushion of air, which prevents damage by eliminating contact with the shell.

BioShell Insulated Shipper
To solve the issue of temperature variations during the shipping process UFP Technologies has recently designed and developed a custom insulated shipping component for the BioShell. The Insulated Shipper keeps frozen BioShells within an adequate temperature range during transportation.  The contents within the shipper can be stored as low as -80° C.

Design Performance
The Insulated Shipper consists of an outer box containing high-performance insulation foam panels combined with specialty film. The foam and film combination improves  insulating properties as well as providing a longer lasting, cleanable surface.  A tray that holds dry ice or phase-change materials  is added to the Insulated Shipper to achieve the proper temperatures during transport. Our Insulated Shippers are customizable to meet customer’s transportation and temperature requirements. 

Testing
Numerous tests have been conducted on the BioShell and Insulated Shipper at our ISTA certified facilities to ensure quality and function of the design. This includes simulated accidental drop tests at various temperatures to ensure that the contents within the BioShell container remain undamaged during extreme conditions.
