Simco Automotive, a UFP Technologies brand, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a specialty provider of technologies and products to the automotive interior industry. Simco Automotive is comprised of two manufacturing facilities located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia.
Simco Automotive is an established and well-respected provider of engineering, prototyping, and tooling services for the automotive industry. The Company specializes in the manufacturing of precision molded components and substrates for automotive interior applications. Simco Automotive has adapted its compression molding technology to produce a wide range of lightweight structural panels, many of which are “Class A” surface components.
Simco Automotive commenced operations in 1961 as Simco Pattern. The Company changed its name to Simco Industries in 1971 and later to Simco Automotive Technologies in 1998 to reflect its growth from a simple pattern shop to a highly integrated supplier of product development technology. Based on the extensive tooling and product development skills which resided at Simco Automotive, the Company decided to utilize these assets in their own production facility with the establishment of Simco Automotive Trim (April 1996).
In January 2000, Simco Automotive was acquired by UFP Technologies as part of a strategic plan to capitalize on its expertise in foam and laminating technologies and enter the automotive industry as a product supplier. UFP Technologies consolidated its two Simco Automotive Michigan facilities into one plant in Macomb Township in 2002.
In 2002, Simco Automotive was selected by a major interior integrator to develop and implement a new process to produce door substrates using an innovative composite material (made from a blend of natural fibers and polypropylene) for all of the Mercedes vehicles manufactured in the Alabama assembly plant. This led to the establishment of the Atlanta plant, and subsequently to the development of the process and prototypes, with full production starting in mid-2005.
The Company’s unique capabilities and its ability to react quickly to customer needs has enabled it to secure major customer programs. Simco Automotive sells its products to Tier I automotive interior suppliers such as Johnson Controls, Webasto, and Inalfa Roof Systems.
