Case Study: Acoustic Treatment Device for Home Studios

As recording technology continues to grow and become more affordable and sophisticated, home studios are becoming a more viable option for recording artists. A provider of innovative acoustical products was in the process of designing an acoustic treatment device designed to isolate a microphone from its external environment. The company was looking for a manufacturing partner who would be able to fabricate a precise spherical foam microphone cover with a pop cover. The product would need to be fabricated in a way that maintained the integrity and acoustics of the foam while also being aesthetically pleasing.

With over 50 years of experience designing and fabricating custom foam components and parts, UFP Technologies was able to custom engineer and produce a spherical foam cover, constructed from a polyurethane open cell foam compound. A unique fabrication method was used to improve the aesthetics and give the product a professional look and feel. To prolong the life of the foam and mask minor blemishes a water based latex coating was applied.

The products function, size, weight, price and visual appeal places it as the only product of its kind within the sound reinforcing market. Our fabrication process gave the finished product a professional look while maintaining acoustical properties necessary for recording vocals. The design of the product channels sound directly into a microphone, making the device ideal for home studio recording. The success of the initial product has encouraged the company to expand its offerings with variations of the microphone cover for smartphones and musical instruments.
